Abstract

Cyber criminals out to steal credit card data have found a way to insert a computer virus directly into the hand-held point-of-sale terminals used at merchants around the world.

The virus, dubbed Dexter, represents a new threat for consumers in the heavy Christmas shopping season.

Until now, getting consumer card information from point-of-sale (POS) terminals has generally been labour-intensive. Criminals have had to steal the units to extract the data, or hide devices designed to read a card’s magnetic stripe on or near the terminals.
